Steroids

Steroids are most commonly used in sports such as weight lifting, professional wrestling (WWE), and other fighting sports. They are illegally used in many other sports, cases of steroid use reported in just about every professional sport.

Steroids are different from other drugs in that when taken they do not give the user the same kind of “high” that drives the abuse of other drugs.

Effects of steroids

Effects of steroid use include: heart disease, liver damage, kidney damage, cancer, strokes and blood clots, depression, thoughts of suicide, paranoia, hallucinations, severe mood swings, and ‘roid rage’ – severe, aggressive behavior that may result in violence.

For men: shrinkage of the testicles (testicular atrophy), reduced sperm count or infertility, baldness, development of breasts (gynecomastia), increased risk for prostate cancer

For Women: growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, deepened voice

Teens (adolescents)- stunted growth due to premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes, and risk of not reaching expected height if steroid use precedes the typical adolescent growth spurt

In addition, people who inject steroids run the added risk of contracting or transmitting HIV/AIDS or hepatitis.

Steroids are different from other drugs in that when taken they do not give the user a “high” that drives the abuse of other drugs.

Steroids weaken the heart

The finding suggests that many years of anabolic steroid use weakens the heart more than has been previously recognized, says cardiologist and study researcher Aaron L. Baggish, MD, of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.
